Spiritual courage

My mother had this spiritual courage, and it saved our lives. She had the courage to stand up to the Nazi thugs that came to loot our home and drag my father away. She could easily have been killed when she demanded my father’s release. I don’t know if it was that my mother (who was Jewish) looked Aryan with her blue eyes and blond hair, but by some miracle she prevailed, and we escaped the Nazis.

I believe the voice of love is the real voice of God, of that mysterious cosmic energy that brought us the beauty of stars and sunsets, of caring and creativity, of all that gives joy and meaning to our lives. I believe that we all have this inner voice of love, and that we all can help build a world where love is embodied, nature is respected, and our human need for fairness and caring is honored.

All we need is spiritual courage. This is the lesson my mother taught me. Because ultimately spirituality is not just talking about love. It is putting love into action.
