The way soul work begins

I see people everywhere seeking to create consequential lives on their own terms; I see people all around me seeking to free themselves in the direction of greater meaning.

It’s exhilarating to witness.

Paradoxically this often requires assuming constraints.

It could be constraints on behavior as one rises to greater ethical challenges for one’s self; or it could be financial constraints from chucking a great-paying career for soul work.

Soul work doesn’t always lead to poverty, but its beginnings frequently detour through some form of lean asceticism.

It’s one of the most intriguing paradoxes of being human: that we can be liberated into greater meaning by a narrowing of choices.

The way a monk goes monastic.

The way a libertine might go monogamous.

The way a professional becomes a specialist. The way you choose a few, from the many, for close friendships. The way you throw off all the other wild and wonderful possibilities when you dive into your soul work.

That’s where the richness begins. Going mano a mano with the thing that matters.
